Conference Objectives and Theme:

TELL 2004 is an interdisciplinary conference aiming to promote the
exchange of research findings among scholars and graduate students in
the fields and related fields of Teaching of Languages, Linguistics,
and Literature.  The conference theme for this year is Globalization
and the Teaching of Languages, Linguistics, and Literature in EFL
Contexts.

The ongoing process of globalization has not only led to a rapid
expansion of the territorial boundaries of English, but also made the
teaching and learning of the languages more complex than ever before,
particularly in the study of English as a second or foreign language.
In conjunction with these issues, new questions have been generated by
globalization and the rapid development of information technology,
including:

1. What's the impact of globalization on local languages and cultures?
2. Does English language teaching require new methods and approaches
in order to cope with the new demands?
3. How can we best use technology and modern tools in foreign language
teaching and learning?
4. Does globalization require new language teaching materials and
content?
5. What is the place of literature and culture in EFL teaching in the
21st Century?
6. Should there be, in fact, many Englishes, and is one as good as
another? or
7. Should some kind of global standardization be imposed so that the
language doesn't become a deformed, bastardized copy of
itself?

Many other questions will be referred to in the conference in the
coming year.

The theme of this conference was chosen to generate further discussion
and academic debate on the above issues.  In particular, presenters
and participants are requested to carefully examine how globalization
will continue influencing the three fields of Language Teaching,
Linguistics, and Literature in EFL contexts.  It is hoped that
presenters will make suggestions as to how language teachers, and
especially graduate students, can participate in further research that
will lead to suggested resolutions to some of the above questions.

Submission Procedure:

Submitters of abstracts will be invited for a 20-minute presentation
(followed by a 10-minute discussion).  We welcome studies relevant to
the conference theme or any topic related to or integrating the three
areas, Teaching of Languages, Linguistics, and Literature.  Please
send your 500-word abstract as an MS Word or PDF attachment to our
e-mail address: TELLconference at nknucc.nknu.edu.tw.  In the body of
your e-mail message, please indicate the following information:

1. Title:
2. Author(s): Name(s), affiliation, phone number, and email addresses
3. Topic Area: Area and sub-area (e.g., Linguistics: Syntax)
4. Keywords: Up to 5 keywords
5. Audiovisual/computer equipment requirements

Submitted papers will be anonymously reviewed.  Accepted presenters
will be invited to submit their polished papers to our journal TELL -
Journal of Teaching of Languages, Linguistics, and Literature, which
will be issued biannually (every six months) by the English Department
of National Kaohsiung Normal University.

Meeting Description:

Congress on Language Diversity, Sustainability and Peace.

The need to preserve the languages of the world and counter the
processes of language shift that are taking place worldwide has become
a major concern shared by researchers, scholars and leaders of many
language communities.

This Dialogue wants to bring together all persons interested in the
maintenance of linguistic diversity in order to generate fruitful
discussions that may be used to hold back the current processes of
cultural homogenization of the world.

The congress will be held in Barcelona between May 20 and 23 in the
framework of the Universal Forum of Cultures - Barcelona 2004. Working
sessions will be of two types. On the one hand, the keynote
communications, that will give a general overview on the three main
axes of the congress (language diversity, sustainability and peace)
and the possible interrelations among them, taking into account the
new cultural, social, political and economic factors stemming from an
increasing globalization process. On the other hand, the five parallel
workshops that will be held in the afternoon sessions will have a more
specific approach to linguistic diversity and its relation to language
policy and planning. Working languages will be Catalan, English,
French and Spanish.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Participants willing to present a communication in the framework of a
specific workshop are invited to submit an abstract of their paper
before March 1st 2004 through electronic mail at info at linguapax.org.
- All papers will be reviewed by the Dialogue's Organising Committee
and by the corresponding workshop coordinator. The results of the
selection process will be made public on March 15th.
- Criteria for selection are appropriateness to the central issue of
the workshop, originality, innovativeness and diversity in terms of
cultural or linguistic origin.
- Only two communications will be selected for each worskhop. The time
allocated to each presentation is limited to 30 minutes, followed by a
15 minutes debate.
- Speakers selected through the call for papers process will have to
be registered as regular participants.
- Abstracts will be saved as Word, RTF or Word Perfect documents. They
shall not exceed 1000 words or 6000 characters including spaces and
must be drafted in any of the working languages of the congress
(Catalan, English, French, Spanish). The intended workshop must
clearly be indicated on the top of the front page. Authors must
indicate their current position and join a short paragraph summarizing
their background.
