Meeting Description:

Workshop: Traditional Justice in East Timor

Workshop Announcement: Traditional Justice in East Timor
The Asia Foundation in Dili, East Timor, is preparing to conduct a
study of traditional dispute resolution and justice in East Timor in
connection with a major program of legal development called ''Access
to Justice'' supported by USAID.

We intend to launch the study with an international workshop on June
27 and 28, 2003. The workshop themes are the following:

1. What is known of traditional dispute resolution, justice and
traditional law in East Timor and where are the major gaps in
knowledge?

2. What progress has been made in East Timor to document vernacular
narratives or recitations that relate to dispute resolution, conflict
settlement, mediation and traditional justice?

We would like to invite scholars to make a presentation on their work,
or work in progress relevant to workshop themes. These presentations
on recent research findings and successful methodologies will inform
and guide subsequent research efforts on dispute resolution and
traditional justice.

If you are selected to give a presentation at the workshop, we will be
able to assist you with the costs of participating in the event in
Dili.

Please contact us by email at your earliest convenience to indicate
the presentation you might make at the workshop.
