''Bridges and Walls in Metalinguistic Discourse''

The purpose of this conference is to bring together different fields
of language studies to uncover the extent of their interplay in the
contemporary linguistic debate. How autonomous is linguistics? To what
extent do autonomous vs. multidirectional approaches to language help
to account for contemporary and historical language change and
variation? Are linguists interested in, or capable of, communicating
across methodological and ideological difference?

We welcome in particular papers demonstrating interdisciplinary
approaches to language, incorporating theoretical and empirical
dimensions of linguistic investigation. We also encourage
contributions that apply modern theories and methods to historical
data, those that evaluate the condition of modern linguistics, and
make projections for the future of the field.

Major topics for discussion within the frame of the conference:
- Autonomy and interdisciplinarity in modern and historical
linguistics;
- Interrelations between theory and praxis in modern and historical
linguistics;
- Modern linguistics: in search for a new paradigm?
- Integrated approaches to language and communication studies;
- Modular and non-modular approaches to language;
- Academic communication among linguists: alignment, bashing, silence;
- Linguistic ideologies and power of academic institutions;
- Linguistics in modern society: social validation of the discipline;
	
We welcome papers incorporating various perspectives on language,
including:
	
sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, discourse semantics, text
linguistics, genre analysis, pragmatics, historical linguistics,
corpus linguistics, intercultural communication, contrastive
linguistics, multilingualism, gender studies.

Papers
Individual papers (20 min. paper /10 min. discussion) and workshop
proposals are invited. Abstracts (500 words), with the
authorâEuro(tm)s name, affiliation, e-mail address, and paper title
should be submitted electronically(http://www.ils.uw.edu.pl) by 31
March 2004. Notification of acceptance will be sent to the authors by
15 May 2004.

Selected papers will be published in the conference proceedings.

The benefits of e-commerce cannot be exploited fully by consumers
because of the lack of trust and confidence in online cross-border
purchases. To achieve fair trad ing and transparency in commercial
communications and transactions, effective compl aint mechanisms need
to be established and involved in e-business activities. This workshop
 aims at bringing together academics, researchers, professionals and
industrial practitioners to discuss issues involved in modeling
ontology of cross-border business regul ations, among other things
focusing on complaint regulations.

We seek original contributions on the following issues of interest,
but not
 limited to:

   - Representation and organization of regulatory ontologies:
modularizati on, layering, reusability, maintainability and
extensibility, etc;

   - Regulatory metadata standards (legal/leg-XML,
ADR/ODR-XML,E280A6);

   - Policies and complaint regulations in Policy RuleML.

   - Ontologies of: complaints, complaint resolutions, complainants,
evidences, etc;

   - Sensitivity on and harmonization of cross-border business
regulations;

   - Experiences with projects and applications of regulatory
ontologies;

   - Multilingual representation of regulatory ontologies;

Submissions

We invite papers of no more than 20 pages length (6000 words or less,
Sprin ger style format) describing original completed work, work in
progress, interesting problems or use cases, or trends in this
research area. Submitted papers will be fully refereed based on the
originality and significance of the ideas presented as well as on
technical aspects.  Accepted papers will be published by
Springer-Verlag as a part of Proceedin gs of the 2003 International
Conference on Ontologies, Databases and Applications of SEman tics
(ODBASE).
