Description:

The Division of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, at The University of
Texas at San Antonio, seeks a specialist in ESL secondary education
with broad knowledge of and record of research on secondary ESL
teacher preparation and methodology for a position as an Assistant
Professor without tenure or tenured Associate Professor to begin Fall
2004, pending budgetary approval.  The Division offers a Bachelor of
Arts in Mexican American Studies, a Master of Arts with concentrations
in Bicultural Studies, Bicultural-Bilingual Education, and English as
a Second Language, and a Ph.D. program in Culture, Literacy, and
Language.  It further supports undergraduate and graduate programs for
teacher certification, and administers an ESL Services Office, with
both workforce literacy and English for International Students
programs.

Responsibilities include: Teach undergraduate and graduate courses
including, but not limited to content-based instruction for non-ESL
preservice teachers at elementary and secondary level, and second
language theory, second language methods, program design and
assessment for ESL and bilingual specialists offered at the UTSA
downtown or Loop 1604 campus, day and/or evening; advise undergraduate
and graduate students; conduct an active research agenda; provide
leadership in the ESL teacher certification program; and provide
service to division, college, university and community constituencies.


Assistant Professor

Required Qualifications: Doctorate (required for Associate) or ABD
close to completion with specialization in ESL, applied linguistics,
second language education, second language acquisition, educational
linguistics or a closely related area.  Record of research and/or
publication in one or more of the following areas: ESL methodology in
school-based settings, ESL program design and assessment, immigrant
education, second language acquisition. Grades 4-12 teaching
experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience conducting research in public
schools (4-12); multiple years teaching experience (4-12); experience
working with funded projects; experience in conducting research among
U.S. language minority populations; supervisory experience in ESL or
teacher training programs; and university teaching experience.


Associate Professor

Required Qualifications: In addition to the above must have a
nationally recognized record of research and publication and
university teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the above, experience in
securing external funding and thesis/dissertation supervision.

Appointment: For hire at the Assistant professor level ABD candidates
must have completed the doctorate by August 15, 2004.  ABD applicants
close to completion will be considered at rank of Instructor.  Salary
is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
