Meeting Description:

Language and Society conference to be held at Massey University,
Palmerston North Campus, New Zealand, September 2-3, 2004, to be
followed by the ALANZ (Applied Linguistics Association of New Zealand)
symposium on September 4

As always, the conference invites papers on all areas of language and
society, this year we are especially interested in papers in the areas
of New Zealand English and community language issues. If there is
enough interest we are hoping to set some time aside for a colloquium
on the state of research in these areas. We also encourage graduate
students to make presentations on their research.

To this end we invite you to send abstracts for papers (20 minutes
plus 10 minute question time) and student presentations (15 mins + 5
min question time) to Martin Paviour-Smith

The ALANZ symposium on September 4 will focus on Internationalisation
and language issues. This includes the following themes.

New Zealand as an international learning setting
Online learning and communication across cultures
Migration and settlement issues
Language policy
Globalisation and language education

We do stress however that papers on other areas of applied research
will be considered. As with the Language and Society conference, we
strongly encourage papers from graduates and new
researchers. Abstracts (200 word limit) to be sent to M Paviour-Smith
at the addresses above by July 6.
