Subject:  How to code a word in isolation for duration study

Dear linguists,

I am a first-year graduate student currently conducting a phonetic
project.  The experiment is to test short and long vowel length
contrast in Japanese.  The contexts vary in factors such as word
length, position of the vowel in the word, sentence length, and
position of the word in the sentence.

I have a problem when coding a one mora word.  Should I code it as
word initial or final?  Also, when a word is in isolation, should I
code it as sentence initial or sentence final?  Could anyone tell me
if there is literature regarding this topic, or share your practice
with me?  If there is enough interest, I will summarize it and post it
on the list.
