M.A. in ICELANDIC LINGUISTICS (in English)


Announcement

We are pleased to announce that the University of Iceland is
developing a one-year M.A. program in Icelandic Linguistics to be
taught in English.

The aim of the program is to give an overview of key linguistic points
of interest in Icelandic grammar rather than to teach Icelandic as a
Foreign Language (a B.Phil. in Icelandic as a Foreign Language is
already well established at the University).  The launch date for the
program is currently scheduled for September 2005 and it is hoped to
be able to offer the M.A. annually.  The majority of courses will be
taught by faculty at the University of Iceland, including:

Eiríkur Rögnvaldsson (Icelandic historical syntax)
Guðrún Thórhallsdóttir (Icelandic/Nordic/Germanic historical
morphology and phonology)
Höskuldur Thráinsson (Icelandic/Scandinavian syntax, Faroese)
Jóhannes Gísli Jónsson (Icelandic syntax and semantics)
Jón G. Friðjónsson (Icelandic prepositions - a functional approach)
Jón Axel Harðarson (Icelandic/Nordic/Germanic historical morphology and
phonology)
Jörgen Pind (Perception of Icelandic speech)
Kristján Arnason (Icelandic phonology and metrics, Icelandic sociolinguistics)
Magnús Snædal (Icelandic and Gothic)
Matthew Whelpton (Icelandic and English syntax and semantics)
Sigríður Sigurjónsdóttir (acquisition of Icelandic)

Guest lecturers will also be invited to share their work on Icelandic
as a regular feature of the program.

Information requested:
To help with the development of this program, the committee in charge
would like to hear from the linguistics community at large, both from
students who would be interested in attending this program from either
2005 or 2006 and from individual linguists who have suggestions
concerning the organisation of the course.  In particular, suggestions
for changes to the proposed course outline below would be welcomed.

Proposed course contents:
The course will be 45 credits in total: 30 credits of taught courses
taught over two semesters (Fall <September to December> and Spring
<January to April>); and a 15 credit thesis to be written over the
summer (completion by the following September).  Of the 30 taught
credits, 25 would be from obligatory courses, taught annually; the
remaining 5 credits would be drawn from optional courses which would
vary from year to year.  A typical set of optional courses is listed
below.  The proposed course structure is therefore as follows:

Semantics and the Grammar of Icelandic
The Historical Development of  Icelandic
Issues in the Sociolinguistics of Icelandic
Issues in the Psycholinguistics of Icelandic
Issues in the Prehistory of Icelandic
Issues in Comparative Nordic Linguistics
Final Thesis (on topic of student´s choice)
