CHINESE LINGUISTICS SECTION AT EACS XV, HEIDELBERG, AUGUST 25-29, 2004

The XVth Conference of the European Association of Chinese Studies
will be held on August 25-29, 2004 in Heidelberg, Germany. The
convenors of the 'Chinese Linguistics' section of the conference are
now soliciting proposals for panels and individual papers on any
aspect of Chinese linguistics or its interfaces with other subdomains
of Chinese studies, including, but not limited to Chinese syntax,
semantics, morphology, phonology, pragmatics, grammatology, socio-,
psycho-, neuro- and text- linguistics in their synchronic and
diachronic perspectives. Proposals for thematically focussed panels,
bringing together at least three contributors and a discussant, and
ideally involving pre-discussion and/or -distribution of the papers
via e-mail among the contributors, are especially welcome.

Submission of abstracts (due by *** February 28, 2004 ***) should be
effected through the ''Paper Submission & Login page'' of the

potential co-panelists and the organization other conference-rlated
practical matters.

Abstracts for 20-min presentations will be gathered by the local EACS
conference team, reviewed by the section convenors, and, if
relevant, other peers in the field. Contributors will be notified
about the acceptance of their papers in late spring. Junior
researchers and doctoral students are strongly encouraged to submit
abstracts, but a reference from the thesis supervisor or another
senior faculty member is kindly requested in such cases, since it is
required by the Central EACS organizing bureau.

Meeting Description:

The Annual Conference on Teaching Spanish to Native Speakers is held
in Las Cruces, NM.  The Conference is dedicated to the dissemination
of information regarding issues, methods, materials, and research
concerning the development of Spanish language skills among
individuals of Spanish-speaking backgrounds.  The conference is open
to community members, teachers of all levels (K-12, Adult Basic
Education, Community College, University), and researchers who wish to
share and learn about the unique challenges of instructing this
diverse group of language learners.

Conference Co-Chairs Cecilia Rodríguez Pino and Patricia
MacGregor-Mendoza seek submissions for the 10th Anniversary Conference
on Teaching Spanish to Native Speakers.  Submissions are being
requested for 30-minute paper sessions (20 minutes presentation 10
minutes discussion) and 2-hour workshop sessions (1.5 hours
presentation, .5 hour discussion) and half-day workshops (3.5 hour
presentation, .5 hour discussion).  Topics may be drawn from any
discipline, but should be broadly related to advancing knowledge of
this growing field by identifying the unique social or linguistic
characteristics of Native Spanish Speakers (e.g. issues in identity,
social history, dialect, proficiency, etc.), developing pedagogical
theory and/or implementing pedagogical techniques that address the
specific needs of Spanish speakers.

Paper submissions: submit one copy of a one-page abstract that
includes the title, an outline of the focus of the paper and the
audience for which your presentation is intended (elementary,
secondary, post-secondary, adult education, community, etc.).  At the
end of your abstract please include the name, affiliation, address,
phone and e-mail of all presenters.  Please also indicate what
audio-visual support you require for the presentation

Workshop submissions: submit a one to two-page abstract which includes
the following information: the title and the length of the
presentation (2 hours or half-day), the audience for which your
workshop is intended (elementary, secondary, post-secondary, adult
education, community) a detailed description of the themes of the
workshop and answers to the following questions: What are the overall
goals of the workshop?  What types of materials will be presented to
the participants?  In what activities will the participants engage as
part of this workshop and in what manner (individual, pairs, groups)?
What skills, abilities and materials will participants take away with
them as a result of this workshop?  At the end of your abstract please
include the name, affiliation, address, phone and e-mail of all
presenters.  Please also indicate what audio-visual support you
require for the presentation.

Interested in chairing a session?  The responsibilities of a session
chair are giving brief introductions of the speakers for each session
and providing speakers guidance on the amount of time left in the
session.  If you would like to be a session chair, please send an
e-mail to Cecilia R. Pino (cecipino at nmsu.edu) or Patricia
MacGregor-Mendoza (pmacgreg at nmsu.edu).

Mail, fax or e-mail the information requested in the submission
guidelines to either of the Conference Co-Chairs, below by the
deadline of February 13, 2004.
