Meeting Description:

The Reinvention Center, established in 2000 as the only national
organization to focus on undergraduate education at research
universities, is holding a conference on ''Integrating Research into
Undergraduate Education: The Value Added.''  It will take place
November 18-19, 2004, in Washington, DC.  The National Science
Foundation and The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation are
co-sponsors.  The conference will consider ways research universities
can re-conceive undergraduate education so that it builds on their
unique assets; has research as a key element, embedded in the
curriculum as well as an independent activity; and impacts their large
and diverse student populations.  There are several sessions on a wide
range of subjects that will be of special interest to linguists.  One
plenary session will focus on recent advances in the ''science of
learning'' and the potential they have to improve undergraduate
teaching and learning.  There are four sessions directed specifically
at faculty in the social sciences.  Professor William Frawley of
George Washington University will lead one group that will examine
approaches to integrating research and classroom instruction.
