Abstract:

This collection of papers by internationally renowned contributors
focuses on social change in different settings and through a wide
range of voices. It offers a fresh view of both systemic functional
linguistics (SFL) and critical discourse analysis (CDA), and looks at
the relationship between these approaches to language.

The book is divided into two parts; the theoretical section explores
ways to study social, political, and economic transformations, whilst
the applied section examines the effects of social change on national
and institutional identities.

This volume is the first to make explicit the connections between SFL
and CDA, so that novices as well as experienced researchers examining
the two fields can more fully understand their interrelationship, and
how CDA can usefully draw on analytical tools rooted in SFL.

The book has several aims: to extend the connections between SFL and
CDA; to provide analyses of social change that are rooted in
llinguistic theory and methodology; to critically analyse a wide-range
of discursive material; and finally to offer a broad range of
international perspectives on the role of discourse in changing social
pratices and patterns.
