We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Dear Linguists --

I am looking for information about any research that has been
conducted on the acquisition of pragmatics, and in particular on the
acquisition of presupposition. I'd be grateful for any references.

Thanks,
Mandy Simons

Dear historical linguists,

I am currently working on eighteenth-century grammarians and their
possible influence on the development of the English subjunctive
mood. To this purpose, I am carrying out a survey to find out who is
considered the most influential grammarian during the 'age of
prescriptivism'. I would therefore like to appeal to other linguists
working on the eighteenth century to nominate who you think is 'the
most influential grammarian' and why you chose this particular
grammarian (i.e. depending on your particular research interest).

I will inform you of the outcome of this poll. Could you please send
your replies to a.auer at stud.man.ac.uk

Thanks for your help!

Kind regards,

Anita Auer (PhD student)
