We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

The follow sentence is ungrammatical:
*Himself was kicked by John.

We may account for the ungrammaticality using Binding Theory. Some
give another account: a passive cannot be derived when the direct
object of the Deep Structure is a reflexive. My question is: is this a
desirable account? If not, why?

Subject: Dissertation survey

I'm looking for scientific support to complete my dissertation on the
problem of ethnical stereotypes in a language. I need participants to
take part in the survey. They should be of British origin, their
gender, age , occupation etc. don't matter. There are 16 questions in
the survey aimed to find out the general impression of the Dutch the
British have. It takes about 10 minutes to complete the form. If you
are kind enough to hepl me, please contact me:
Institute2002 at rambler.ru. I'll submit the electronic form I do hope
for your cooperation.
