The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

University or Organization: University of Maryland
Department: Center for Advanced Study of Language
Job Rank: Assistant/Associate/Senior Research Scientist
Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Human Language Technology

Description:

The Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL), a university-affiliated
research center located at the University of Maryland, was established in
2003 under a renewable five-year contract. Its mission is to conduct
state-of-the-art research in areas that result in improved performance on
language tasks relevant to the work of government language professionals.
Work done at the center focuses on improving knowledge of less commonly
taught languages, enhancing the acquisition and maintenance of foreign
language capability by government professionals (especially at the advanced
levels), advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in a wide
variety of government professions and situations, and improving the quality
of human language technology.

The Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) at the University of
Maryland is seeking to expand its research team in areas related to Human
Language Technology (HLT) development, evaluation, and adaptation for
integration into the workplace. Our research emphasis is on multilingual
NLP applications (e.g., machine translation, multilingual summarization,
information extraction and retrieval). We will also conduct research
relevant to improving linguistic knowledge resource development (e.g.
bilingual dictionaries, tree banks, grammar tools, annotated and
un-annotated corpora, etc.). Throughout the center, researchers drawn from
linguistics, cognitive and computer science, and anthropology will work in
collaborative teams to aid government professionals in the improvement of
their on the job performance or foreign language training.

Candidates must have earned a Ph.D in an area providing training in
Computational Linguistics or HLT (e.g., Computer Science, Linguistics).
The candidate's research record should indicate accomplishment in areas
related to the duties described above. Preference will be given to those
candidates whose record indicates the ability to tackle complex,
interdisciplinary research, and to work collaboratively with a range of
institutions and researchers. Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be
willing to obtain a security clearance. For information on U.S. government
security clearances, please see http://www.dss.mil/psi/faq.htm.

To apply, send a letter of application, curriculum vitae including
potential referees, and relevant writing samples to the address below or email

opportunity employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. Questions
