non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding

University or Organization: University of Maryland
Department: Center for Advanced Study of Language
Job Rank: Associate/Senior Research Scientist
Specialty Areas: Sociolinguistics; Dialectology
Required Language: Persian

Description:

The Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL), a university-affiliated
research center located at the University of Maryland, was established in
2003 under a renewable five-year contract. Its mission is to conduct
state-of-the-art research in areas that result in improved performance on
language tasks relevant to the work of government language professionals.
Work done at the center focuses on improving knowledge of less commonly
taught languages, enhancing the acquisition and maintenance of foreign
language capability by government professionals (especially at the advanced
levels), advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in a wide
variety of government professions and situations, and improving the quality
of human language technology.

CASL is seeking to expand its research team in the area of Persian
dialectology and/or Persian sociolinguistics. CASL invites applications
for a research scientist to develop CASL's research program on variation in
the languages and dialects of the Persian speaking peoples of Central and
Southwest Asia. CASL seeks a linguist with specialization in dialectology,
anthropological linguistics/field methods, or sociolinguistics, with a
strong research record in the Persian languages and dialects. The incumbent
will oversee the development of research projects that enable government
employees, especially foreign language professionals, to improve their
performance. S/he should also be adept at identifying and recruiting
researchers.

Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in linguistics, a Persian language
(Persian, Dari, Tajik, or a related language), or a related field, a record
of individual research achievement in one or another aspect of language
variation in Central and/or Southwest Asia, a strong record of publication,
and the ability to establish an interdisciplinary research program across
areas related to the study of language and analysis. The center is seeking
people who will play a leading role in the strategic direction of CASL and
will be in charge of multiple research projects in their field. Candidates'
research and publications should show evidence of ability to tackle
complex, interdisciplinary research and to work collaboratively with a
range of institutions and researchers. Preference will be given to
candidates who have experience working with industry or government in
non-academic settings. Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be willing
to obtain a security clearance. For information on U.S. government
security clearances, please see http://www.dss.mil/psi/faq.htm.

To apply, send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and writing
sample to the address below or e-mail jobs at casl.umd.edu. The University of
Maryland is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. Women and
minorities are encouraged to apply. Questions about this position should be sent by
