The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

University or Organization: University of Maryland
Department: Center for Advanced Study of Language
Job Rank: Research Associate/Assistant Research Scientist
Specialty Areas: Language Acquisition; Second Language Acquisition

Description:

The Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL), a university-affiliated
research center located at the University of Maryland, was established in
2003 under a renewable five-year contract. Its mission is to conduct
state-of-the-art research in areas that result in improved performance on
language tasks relevant to the work of government language professionals.
Work done at the center focuses on improving knowledge of less commonly
taught languages, enhancing the acquisition and maintenance of foreign
language capability by government professionals (especially at the advanced
levels), advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in a wide
variety of government professions and situations, and improving the quality
of human language technology.

CASL is seeking to expand its research team in the area of ethnographic and
qualitative research methods in second language acquisition, with a
particular focus on program evaluation. CASL invites applications for a
research scientist to work in CASL's research program on advanced adult
second language acquisition. CASL seeks a scholar with specialization in
ethnographic and qualitative approaches to SLA research and experience in
the application of these methods to second language acquisition, pedagogy,
or program evaluation. The incumbent will assist in the development of
research projects that enable government employees, especially foreign
language professionals, to improve their performance.

Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition,
Applied Linguistics, Educational linguistics, or a related field, a record
demonstrating promise of individual research achievement and potential for
publication, and experience in ethnographic field methods and qualitative
data analysis. Candidates' research and publications should show evidence
of ability to tackle complex, interdisciplinary research and to work
collaboratively with a range of institutions and researchers. Preference
will be given to candidates who have experience working with industry or
government in non-academic settings. Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship
and be willing to obtain a security clearance. For information on U.S.
government security clearances, please see http://www.dss.mil/psi/faq.htm.

To apply, send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and writing
sample to or e-mail jobs at casl.umd.edu. The University of Maryland is an
affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. Women and minorities are
encouraged to apply. Questions about this position should be sent by
