University or Organization: University of Maryland
Department: Center for Advanced Study of Language
Job Rank: Senior Research Scientist
Specialty Areas: Sociolinguistics; Variation

Description:

The Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL), a university-affiliated
research center located at the University of Maryland, was established in
2003 under a renewable five-year contract. Its mission is to conduct
state-of-the-art research in areas that result in improved performance on
language tasks relevant to the work of government language professionals.
Work done at the center focuses on improving knowledge of less commonly
taught languages, enhancing the acquisition and maintenance of foreign
language capability by government professionals (especially at the advanced
levels), advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in a wide
variety of government professions and situations, and improving the quality
of human language technology.

CASL is seeking to expand its research team in sociolinguistics. CASL
invites applications for a senior research scientist to lead CASL's
research program on variation. The successful candidate will have strong
research and publications in sociolinguistics (language variation, language
policy, social reactions, language surveys, or endangered languages) and
will develop and supervise a major multi-year research project across
several languages and geographic areas. In addition, s/he will oversee the
development of other research projects that enable government employees,
especially foreign language professionals, to improve the performance of
language related tasks, and will help in recruiting additional research
staff.

Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in linguistics or a related field, a
record of individual research achievement in one or another aspect of
language variation, preferably with fieldwork experience, a strong record
of publication, and the ability to establish an interdisciplinary research
program across areas related to the study of language and analysis. The
Center is seeking people who will play a leading role in the strategic
direction of CASL and will be in charge of multiple research projects in
their field. Candidates' research and publications should show evidence of
ability to tackle complex, interdisciplinary research and to work
collaboratively with a range of institutions and researchers. They should
have a record of successfully hiring, mentoring, and overseeing both junior
and senior researchers. Preference will be given to candidates who have
experience working with industry or government in non-academic settings.
Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be willing to obtain a security
clearance. For information on U.S. government security clearances, please
see http://www.dss.mil/psi/faq.htm.

To apply, send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and writing
sample to the address below or e-mail jobs at casl.umd.edu. The University of
Maryland is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. Women and
minorities are encouraged to apply. Questions about this position should be sent by
