The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

Description:

University of Manchester
National Centre for Text Mining (NaCTeM)
School of Informatics
JISC/BBSRC/EPSRC-funded positions:
Project Officer
Commercial Manager
Two Research Assistant / Research Associate Positions

NaCTeM's overall remit is to deliver large-scale text mining services to the
academic community, focussing initially on the biosciences. NaCTeM will work
with academic and commercial partners to set up a wide range of related
services and to promulgate best practice, and will play a key role in driving
the associated national and international agendas in text mining.

We are looking for people interested in helping to build the long-term future
of NaCTeM, through effective establishment, maintenance and further
development of high-quality services and service support. This is a chance
to be in at the beginning of a Centre that intends to evolve into a body of
major national and international importance.

The University of Manchester leads the Centre consortium, which includes the
University of Liverpool, and the University of Salford. In addition, 4
international self-funded partners are contributing to the consortium's work:
the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Geneva; the San Diego
Supercomputing Centre; and the University of Tokyo.

The Project Officer will be expected to combine technical development skills
and communication, project management, leadership and organisational
abilities. The activities involve a significant project management
component to ensure the implementation of the service to be developed at
the Centre. The technical activity will be similar to that of the RA

and project management.

The Commercial Manager will be expected to combine commercial and business
acumen, with communication, leadership and organisational skills. The
activities will involve the set-up and management of the commercial and
business development activity of the Centre to support the aims and objectives
of the Centre. The Commercial Manager will be responsible for the external
presence and profile of the Centre in its related commercial and academic
communities.

The RA activities will involve a mix of infrastructure and tool development
for text mining; integration of third party tools and resources; user training
and support; and establishment of efficient, scalable text mining services in
a GRID environment. Applicants should demonstrate flexibility and the ability
to work in a multi-disciplinary team, to meet service establishment deadlines.
Expertise in middleware, web-services, XML, and Java, preferably in a
distributed computing environment, is desirable.

Appointments are for 2 years in the first instance.
