A conference focusing on current research on Canadian English, being held
in honour of Professor Jack Chambers 

This call is a reminder that the deadline for abstract submission is
Friday, October 15.

The Department of Linguistics, University of Toronto, is organizing a
conference on Canadian English in the Global Context in honour of Jack
Chambers. The conference aims to address the following questions: What are
the characteristics of Canadian English that distinguish it from other
English dialects? How does Canadian English vary across the nation? What
accounts for this variation? What changes is Canadian English undergoing?
How has Canadian English been influenced by contact with other languages
such as Aboriginal languages, French, and immigrant languages? What effect
does American English have on Canadian speech? What is the role of Canadian
English in the context of World English?

Abstracts are invited for twenty minute talks (plus ten minutes discussion).
- Abstracts should be a single page, 12 point type; examples and references
can be on a second page.
- Abstracts should be submitted as .pdf or Microsoft Word attachments, sent
to the e-mail address below.
- Please send two copies of the abstract, one with no identifying
information and a second including your name and affiliation below the title.
- In the body of the e-mail, please include the following information:

- the contributions of pragmatic competence to overall language proficiency
- cross-cultural pragmatics/discourse analysis
- pragmatic development in a second language
- developments in pragmatic research and methodology
- integrating pragmatics in language teaching

Abstract Submissions:
- Abstracts should be sent via electronic mail as an attachment (Word,
WordPerfect, or PDF format) to:  pll2005 at indiana.edu
- One-page abstract (300 words, maximum) with the title but no author's name
- Include a separate page with author's name, email address, and
institutional affiliation
- Authors may submit one individual and one joint abstract

Abstract deadline: November 1, 2004

Workshops:
There will be a pre-conference workshop on the teaching pragmatics in
foreign and second language contexts on Thursday, April 14, 2005. A 3-hour
workshop, Learner Corpus Analysis and the Development of L2 Pragmatic
Competence in Computer Networked Environments, will be conducted by Julie
Belz, Pennsylvania State University, followed by three one-hour workshops
by Alwiya Omar, César Félix-Brasdefer, and Rebecca Mahan-Taylor. The
workshop will feature poster sessions on teaching pragmatics by
participants (poster proposal deadline February 1, 2005). 

Colloquium:
There will be a colloquium on Political Discourse and Intercultural
Pragmatics led by Beverly Hartford and Samuel Obeng, Indiana University, on
Saturday, April 16.

Conference Proceedings:
Participants will be invited to submit their papers to be considered for
publication in the conference proceedings.
