Meeting Description:

This workshop will be the first of hopefully many to follow on Generative
Approaches to Contrastive Linguistics. Taking a small sample of languages
to be studied in comparison, GACL 1 will be devoted to the grammars of
English and Greek, including their dialects.

This workshop brings together prominent scholars in the grammars of Greek
and English. The aim of GACL is to present to the students and faculty of
the University of Cyprus some of the differences, but also similarities, of
two languages they are most familiar with. The leading idea is to bring
closer to the audience some of the main theses of generative research in a
specific contrastive and comparative setting. Each presentation will
consist of a 60-minute lecture in which interaction with the students is
especially encouraged, followed by a more traditional 10-minute question
period.
