We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Subject: Initial voiceless stop consonant duration

For a decision lexical task with japanese speakers, we have created a
program which allow the measure of reaction time from the beginning of
spoken words. The problem is that, in the case of voiceless stop
consonant, the detection is made at the burst of the consonant. In
order to obtain correct reaction times, we want to evaluate the
duration of the closure and it's not possible to split this from the
preceding silence.

We are looking for any method allowing to evaluate the closure
duration of initial voiceless stop consonants.

We wonder if it would be possible to estimate the initial closure
duration from the corresponding closure in intervocalic location.

Thank you,

Nathalie Decoppet & Christelle Dodane.
