Head of Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics [Ref.
C/572/09]

City University of Hong Kong is a young and dynamic
institution directly funded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region through the University Grants Committee (Hong
Kong).  Its strategic plan is an ambitious one, reflecting its
aspirations to become one of the leading universities in the
Asia-Pacific region by achieving excellence in teaching and research.
The University emphasizes excellence in both teaching and research.
The student population of the University is approximately 15,000
(9,000 full-time and 6,000 part-time)plus some 6,000 students in the
Community College of City University.  The medium of instruction is
English. The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics offers
programmes of study at both the undergraduate and postgraduate
levels designed to address the growing needs of Hong Kong and other
Chinese communities for language professionals well versed in areas
such as Chinese, translation and interpretation, comparative literary
and cultural studies, and linguistics and language technology.
Teaching and research in the Department are characterized by a
strong emphasis on both the scientific and humanistic study of
language and communication with the aim of achieving a balanced
approach to the pursuit of theoretical insight and practical
application. State-of-the-art facilities, including one of the best
equipped phonetics laboratories in Asia, provide support for both
teaching and research.  Our teaching programmes include the B.A.
(Hons) in Chinese, in Linguistics and Language Technology, and in
Translation and Interpretation; M.A. in Language and Law, in
Linguistics, and in Translation and Interpretation; and two
self-financed programmes B.A. (Hons) in Language Studies (with
specialization in Chinese, Linguistics and Language Technology, or
Translation and Interpretation), PGC/PGD/MA in Language Studies (with
specialization in Chinese, Language and Law, Linguistics, or
Translation and Interpretation).  The Department also offers research
degree studies toward MPhil and PhD degrees in the application of
linguistics and language technology.  In addition to its own
programmes, the Department also offers minors in Japanese and Korean
studies. The Head of Department will be expected to provide strong
academic leadership in the development of teaching and research in
the Department.  Candidates should possess strong academic and
professional qualifications, substantial relevant experience in
tertiary education and a successful record of research and
scholarship. Candidates will also be required to demonstrate an
ability to give managerial leadership in the Department. The
University also accepts nominations and reserves the right to consider
late applications and nominations or not to fill the position. The
successful candidate will be offered appointment to an academic rank
commensurate with the appointee's qualifications and experience.  The
appointment will either be on superannuable terms with provision for
superannuation benefits, or on fixed-term contract with contract-end
gratuity.  Concurrently, the appointee will be offered the headship
appointment for a period of three years initially.  Fringe benefits
include annual leave, medical and dental schemes and passage allowance
where applicable.  Provision of housing benefit is under review.
