Subject: A Bequest from Kathy Ferrara

On September 20th 2003 Kathy Ferrara passed away after a long
struggle against cancer. This was a great loss, not just to linguistics,
where her work in discourse had received high praise, but also to
me personally. For some years I taught linguistics at Texas A&M
University, and there Kathy and I became firm friends. When I left,
this friendship continued, and every so often one of us would call
the other and spend some hours catching up on all the things that
had been happening in our lives. I missed those calls, when Kathy
left us.

Then, this last month, I was reminded again of Kathy. I discovered
that she had left the LINGUIST List a bequest of $2000 in her will.
In one way, it was a complete surprise to us all here at the LINGUIST
List, for we had expected nothing. Yet in another way it was just
what I should have expected Kathy to do. She never told me about
the bequest; but then Kathy never mentioned the favors she had done
for people, or the generosity she so oftenshowed.

It seems fitting, then, that we should send you all this message, so
that the LINGUIST List can acknowledge what she has done, and let
you our subscribers know of her concern for the List when she decided
to make this bequest. It is the least we can do.
