The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Job Rank: Researcher
Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics

Description:

The theoretical computational linguistics group (headed by Prof. Dr. Uwe
Mönnich) at University of Tübingen, Germany, has an opening for a Research
Associate (wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter BAT IIa/2) with specialisation in
Computational Linguistics starting as soon as possible.

The position is fractional (50%) and temporary, ending 30th September 2008. This
position is suitable for candidates wishing to pursue a PhD in computational
linguistics.

The successful candidate will be a member of the research project 'Linguistic
Description Structures as Data Types' of the collaborative research centre 441
on 'Linguistic Data Structures' (http://tcl.sfs.uni-tuebingen.de/a2/). An
important part of the project is research on theoretical and practical aspects
of querying linguistic treebanks. To make these valuable resources accessible
to linguists, the development of powerful query systems with decent runtime
properties is an important goal in computational linguistics.

Duties:
Development and implementation of a query system for treebanks based on tree
automata.

Profile:
The successful candidate must have a four-year degree in computational
linguistics or computer science. He or she should have practical experience in
the design and implementation of larger software systems. Knowledge of
linguistic treebanks and/or the theory of tree automata is a plus.
