Subject: 5th International Summer School, Forensic Linguistics

The Fifth International Summer School in Forensic Linguistic Analysis will take
place at the University of Lodz from 7th to 11th September 2005. This five-day
event will address subjects within the broadly defined discipline of forensic
linguistics, including the structure of legal language, forensic authorship
attribution, copyright issues, plagiarism and its detection, and forensic
phonetics. Among the tutors will be world-renowned scholars in the field of
language and the law and forensic linguistics, with Professor Malcolm Coulthard
assuming the role of Director of Studies.

Subject: 3rd International Linguistics Olympiad

Dear colleagues,

We are happy to announce the Third International Linguistics Olympiad
for secondary school students, which will take place from 8 to 12
August 2005 in the beautiful town of Leiden, The Netherlands.

The world's First International Olympiad in Linguistics was
successfully held in September 2003 in the mountain resort Borovetz,
Bulgaria. The second edition was held in August 2004 in the Russian
capital, Moscow.  More information about this event can be found at:

The idea of holding an International Olympiad stems from the experience
with the Olympiads in Linguistics and Mathematics in Moscow and
St. Petersburg. Since 1984, linguistic contests have also been
regularly held in Bulgaria. In recent years similar events have been
organised in the United States and the Netherlands. Selections of
problems from past events are available in English, Bulgarian, Czech, Dutch,
Estonian and Russian at:

We invite the participation of teams, consisting of one team leader
and up to four contestants. The contestants must be students of a
school for secondary education, or they must have graduated from
secondary education in 2005. Teams may represent individual cities as
well as countries (one team per city; the Organising Committee also
reserves the right to place a limit on the number of teams from one
country). Those requiring a visa to enter The Netherlands will receive
assistance with the formalities.

Competitors will need no special knowledge to solve the problems
offered at the International Olympiad. Each linguistic problem is
dedicated to some interesting phenomenon in one or several languages.
There will be two contests: an individual contest and a team contest.

For preliminary registration for participation in the International
Olympiad, write to me at m.a.c.de.vaan at let.leidenuniv.nl
or a.m.lubotsky at let.leidenuniv.nl (Alexander Lubotsky) no later than* 1** April
2005*. If possible, indicate the approximate age of the contestants and their
experience, if any, with solving linguistic problems. Teams which fail to meet
this deadline are not guaranteed the right of participation. The final
application must be sent by the team leader by* 31 May 2005*; it must contain
the list of team  members together with the language in which each of them
wishes to have the problems of the individual contest, as well as the language
in which the team will receive the problems of the team contest.
