University or Organization: University of Tromsø
Job Rank: PhD
Specialty Areas: Phonology; Syntax

The University of Tromsø invites applications for up to 3 research fellow
positions (Ph.D. students) in theoretical linguistics.

The positions are associated with the Center for Advanced Study in
Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL) at the Faculty of Humanities. CASTL is a
relatively new research centre with funding from the University of Tromsø
and the Norwegian Research Council through their Centre of Excellence
scheme. CASTL defines a research community of well over 20 staff.

One of the positions -Position 1- will be linked to a specific research
program in syntax named Moving right along, directed by Professor Peter
Svenonius. For more information on this project, see
http://uit.no/castl/4514/14 .

For the other two positions -Position 2 and Position 3- we solicit
applications connected to any one (or more) of CASTL's projects, as
presented at http://castl.uit.no .

Please indicate which position(s) you are applying for. Applicants applying
for more than one position may send a single set of application materials.

The successful applicant will document scientific competence in theoretical
linguistics at the Master's level. Applicants must have proficiency in
English at a level appropriate for advanced scientific work.

The salary for the positions follows the relevant Norwegian regulations. At
the time the regular salary for a research fellow is NOK 292.200, - per
year. A 2 % contribution to the Norwegian pension fund is obligatory.

The application should include:

a letter of application (up to 3 pages) with a description of the
applicants' background, research experience and the relevance of previous
work to CASTL's research project

Master's thesis or equivalent work, and, possibly, other relevant material
(see Works below)

a research proposal (5-7 pages), which must be relevant to CASTL's research
profile as described on http://castl.uit.no

2 letters of recommendation

certified copies of references, diplomas and transcripts

a complete list of publications including information about where the works
have been published

Applications will be evaluated by an expert committee. Emphasis will be put
on the candidates' potential for research based on the Master's thesis,
other academic works and the research proposal.

The evaluation will consider the need to maintain breadth within CASTL's
research profile, taking into consideration our core strengths in syntax
and phonology. The evaluation will only consider information and material
which are submitted by the deadline.

NB! The official deadline is not yet known. It should not be before March
18th. Please watch castl.uit.no for updates on the official deadline (which
is the deadline for postmarks).

The application should be sent in 5 collated sets.

NB! We also want the application letter and project proposal sent to us
electronically at castl at hum.uit.no.

Applicants should send 3 collated sets of academic works - published or
unpublished.

The University of Tromsø wishes to recruit women to academic positions.
When two applicants are found to be essentially equally qualified, the
University will rank the female applicant ahead of the male applicant.
