non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international

Job Rank: Full Professor
Specialty Areas: Syntax; Morphology, Semantics, Phonology
Required Language: English (ENG)

Description:

Agder University College invites applications for a permanent position as
Professor in English Linguistics in the Department of English, Faculty of Arts,
at Gimlemoen Campus. This newly-built campus is beautifully situated near the
forest, within walking distance of the city of Kristiansand on the southern
coast of Norway. The college is popular among students and sought after by
academics due to the quality of its programmes and to its situation in one of
Norway's favourite areas for recreation. The city of Kristiansand offers a wide
range of cultural and other activities.

Agder University College (HiA) is one of the largest colleges in Norway with
over 8000 students and a staff of 900. The college has seven faculties. It aims
to fulfil the requirements of the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in
Education and obtain full university status within the spring of 2005.

The Faculty of Arts offers programmes of introductory and advanced studies in
its four units: Languages; Theology and Philosophy; History; Nordic and Media
Studies. All teaching is at university level and the teaching ranges from
smaller units in Teacher Education to Ph.D level in Nordic languages and Nordic
literature.

At present the English Department offers a two-year MA in English, a three-year
BA in English, a Teacher-Training programme and a three-year BA in Translation
and Terminology.

The applicant must document qualifications at the level of Professor in English
Linguistics with a particular emphasis on English grammar (Semantics,
Morphology, Syntax, Phonology). Qualifications within Discourse Analysis and
Communication are also desirable.

In addition to considering the scholarly qualifications of the applicants the
appointing committee will also take into account relevant teaching experience,
as well as teaching ability and administrative and inter-personal skills.

The position will entail particular responsibility for initiating, stimulating
and enhancing undergraduate and graduate teaching as well as research and
research-related activities, both within the institution and in a wider
international scholarly field. Some of the teaching may be organised in
cooperation with other disciplines and other Faculties.

As the advertised position involves administrative duties, it would be
advantageous that the appointee is in command of a Scandinavian language. Should
this not be the case, the person appointed must be willing to learn Norwegian
within a three-year period. The person appointed will be expected to settle in
the region.

After the Committee has submitted its report, the candidate may be called to an
interview or a seminar.

The position is placed on a salary scale in accordance with the coding for state
employees. The salary for a professor will be in the range of NOK
446,100-529,100. From this there will be automatic mandatory deductions towards
the state pensions fund.

Applications with CV and certified copies of qualifications and references in
four copies must be submitted, together with three copies of no more than 15
selected scholarly works as well as a full list of works. Documentation of
scholarly work and qualifications must be in English or a Scandinavian language.

The full application must be sent to the address below. A description of the
position and more details are to be obtained from Professor Oddvar Holmesland
