The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

University or Organization: University of British Columbia
Department: Linguistics
Job Rank: Post Doc
Specialty Areas: Phonetics

Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of British Columbia invites
applications for a Teaching Postdoctoral Fellowship in phonetics
and one in theoretical linguistics. Successful candidates will teach,
conduct research in their field of expertise, and participate actively in
the intellectual life of the department. As well as its strengths in
phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, first language
acquisition and field linguistics, the UBC Department of Linguistics has a
commitment to the theoretically informed study and documentation of First
Nations Languages.

In addition to their primary research area, it would be an advantage for
candidates to have a secondary specialization in one or more of the
following areas: field linguistics, languages of the Americas, West African
languages, language acquisition, laboratory phonology, and speech science.

Postdoctoral Teaching Fellows teach up to 4 three-credit courses during the
academic year (September to April inclusive). The appointments run for 12
months starting at a date to be negotiated between 1 July and 1 September
2005; the salary range is $35,000 to $40,000 (Canadian). Applicants should
have a PhD in linguistics.

Send hard copy of the following materials to the address below: (i)
application letter; (ii) curriculum vitae; (iii) teaching evaluations (if
available); (iv) a sample of published or unpublished work. Also arrange
for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same address, and
send electronic versions of the application letter and curriculum vitae to
stemberg at interchange.ubc.ca or by fax to (604) 822-9687.

Any applicant whose materials are received by February 11, 2005 is
guaranteed consideration. Both appointments are subject to final budgetary
approval. UBC hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment
equity; we encourage all qualified persons to apply. Since these are
postdoctoral awards, the positions are open equally to citizens of any country.

Details regarding the Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship in Phonetics
Applicants in phonetics should have a specialization in phonetics and
experience in a major research laboratory. The Phonetics Fellow is likely
to teach courses in the following areas: (i) undergraduate level courses in
phonetics, speech science, and instrumental phonetics (Ling 316, Ling 317);
(ii) graduate level courses in the foundations of phonetics as well as
phonetic theory and analysis (Ling 507, Ling 508). In addition to teaching,
the Phonetics Fellow will work at the Interdisciplinary Speech Research
Laboratory (ISRL) for the full 12-month appointment, collaborating with
faculty, graduate students, and technical staff. A suitable candidate may
be asked to assist with the administration of the ISRL with an appropriate
reduction of teaching load. (See http://www.linguistics.ubc.ca/isrl
