International Conference: 'Translating Voices, Translating Regions. Theory and
Practice in the Translation of Regionalised Voices', in Rieti, Italy, 17-18
September 2005. 

In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries the study of translation has
equipped itself in theory and method sufficiently to claim the status of a
scholarly discipline in its own right. There still exist however substantial
fields of research and theoretical reflection that can fruitfully and
systematically contribute to the study of translation, not least in the
rendering of regional voices. Regionalised languages, marginal voices, dialects,
accents, and minority languages have in recent decades and at different levels
informed many manifestations of cultural practice. Questions to do with a code
of practice and a closer collaboration between theorists and practitioners have
become pressing in the context of the need for a common progress of the
discipline and of its practical outcomes. This conference aims to explore the
question of practices and theories in the translation of marginal voices, not
only in traditional literature, but also in film dubbing, a process which is
particularly strong in the French and Italian tradition of the movie industry. 

The organisers welcome proposals that explore the major themes of the
conference, and papers are invited on any of the following aspects of translation: 
-DUBBING AND DIALECT 
-REGIONALISED VOICES IN TRANSLATION 
-LANGUAGES OF MINORITIES AND THEIR TRANSLATION

The location for the event is Rieti, a historic town in the heart of Italy about
80 km / 50 miles from Rome. With its 13th-century walls, which still surround
the oldest alleyways of the town, and its churches and handsome town houses, the
centre still conveys the feeling of its medieval past. The dramatic features of
its natural surroundings, notably Mount Terminillo (20 minutes by coach), make
it a place well worth visiting.  A trip to nearby places of interest will be
organised for after the conference.    Papers will be accepted in any of the
three official languages of the conference: English, Italian, and French. The
limit of three languages is due to the centrality of dubbing (mostly into US
English) in the French and Italian traditions, as well as for practical
editorial reasons. Clearly, theoretical approaches fitting into the framework
described above will be welcome from scholars and professionals speaking other
languages, so long as papers are offered in one of the three languages of the
conference. 

ABSTRACTS  MUST REACH THE CONVENORS BY 15 MARCH 2005. Abstracts, of not more
than 300 words, should be sent via email in .doc, .rtf format only to the

will be published by DEUI (Rieti). The deadline for the first draft of papers

Lisbon Workshop on Production vs Comprehension in the Acquisition of Syntax

Universidade Nova de Lisboa, June 6-7, 2005 

Research on language acquisition has established that comprehension precedes
production. Many studies determine the acquisition of a certain property of the
grammar based on children's productions only or on comprehension data only.
Given the specificity of some syntactic constructions, in some cases, it is not
easy to access both production and comprehension data. Yet, it is widely
acknowledged that both sources of data are useful in order to deepen our
understanding on the development of grammar.

The aim of this workshop is to gather contributions, trying to answer questions
like the following:

a. Are there areas in syntax in which the usual comprehension-before-production
pattern is not found?
b. Developmental scales should be defined in terms of production, comprehension,
or both?
c. Since it is known that parameters are set at a very early stage, which
experimental methods can be used to test children's development in the
comprehension of syntax?
d. How can results from comprehension help us in explaining children's
production and vice-versa?

Papers are invited for 20 minute talks followed by discussion.   Please submit
anonymous 2-page abstracts (font times new roman 12pt) in word or PDF format to
