10th Annual Graduate Symposium in Romance Studies
CALL FOR PAPERS
Saturday, March 25th, 2006
(En)countering Cultures:

A graduate symposium co-sponsored by the  Department of Spanish & Portuguese and
the Department of French & Italian, University of Minnesota.

This symposium will explore how we engage fragments and traces of literary
and/or historical ruins and remnants in the spaces of everyday encounters in
today's global community.  It also invites dialogue and reflection on questions
of how we  integrate/reject/revisit/correct history to change our present
perceptions and future potentials.

Possible topics include:
memory and forgetting
arts and literatures in contact
bodies, borders, and belonging
coexistence: tolerance and intolerance
virus and contamination:  diffusion and dissemination of constructs
knowledge transfer and transformation
natural and unnatural disasters:  nature, nationalism and human rights violations
criollismo and mestizaje / créole and métissage
what makes / who decides values of culture?
interactions and collisions between cultures:  sociolinguistics
expressions of culture - studio, street, and fine arts, language, pragmatics

The list suggests a wide array of topics and relevant themes, however it is not
meant to be exhaustive nor limiting in its scope. Submissions from all
disciplines and time periods are encouraged. Abstracts submitted should be in
English and of no more than 300 words accompanied by the title of the paper,
name, academic affiliation, address and email address. Abstracts may be sent via
post or email. Papers should not exceed a reading period of twenty (20) minutes. 

Deadline for submission: January 20th,  2006

Meeting Description:

For over a decade, the biennial International Symposium on Chinese Languages and
Linguistics (IsCLL) has become a major academic event for the small but active
linguistic community of Taiwan. 

We are pleased to announce that the next symposium (IsCLL-10) will be held in
conjunction with the 14th Annual Conference of the International Association of
Chinese Linguistics (IACL-14) at Academia Sinica on May 25-29, 2006, hosted
jointly by the Institute of Linguistics of Academia Sinica and the Linguistic
Society of Taiwan. The conjoined conference will bear the general theme of
LANGUAGE DIVERSITY, and feature several keynote speeches and invited talks by
distinguished scholars in Chinese linguistics and specialists on the topic of
language diversity. 

Call for Papers

The 14th Annual Conference of the International Association of Chinese
Linguistics (IACL-14) and the 10th International Symposium on Chinese Languages
and Linguistics (IsCLL-10) will be jointly held and hosted by the Institute of
Linguistics, Academia Sinica. Abstracts are cordially invited. Relevant
information is given below.

Date: May 25-29, 2006. 
Venue: Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan. 

Sets of Program: There will be two sets of program. One is dedicated to the
special theme ''Language Diversity'' and the other ''General Theme''. Abstracts
received will be sent for review and then be assigned, if it is accepted, to
either set according to the reviewers' suggestion. 
Subsidy Policy: Authors of the abstracts assigned to the ''Language Diversity''
set will receive partial travel subsidy. Full papers, however, should be
submitted prior to the conference. The maximum capacity for this set is 20
papers. Authors of abstracts assigned to the ''General Theme'' will not receive
subsidy and are not required to submit full papers. There is no limit of the
number of papers in this set. 

All abstracts of both sets are subjected to anonymous review. Abstracts must be
sent by email to iacl at gate.sinica.edu.tw. An electronic version of Word file is
highly desirable. The suggested length for abstracts is two pages, either in
Chinese or English. Please include the following information: title of the
paper, name of the author, affiliation, postal address, and email address. The
information that identifies the author will be deleted from the copy of the
abstract to be sent for review. 
Deadline for receipt of abstracts: December 31, 2005. 
Notification of acceptance: January 1-31, 2006. 
Deadline for submission of required full papers: April 30, 2006.
