I am currently embarking on a Ph.D. thesis in linguistics at University
College, London. My subject is ''Alphabet Adaptation'' - the adaptation of
the Roman and Cyrillic alphabets to established written languages in the
past, and the creation of orthographies for previously unwritten languages
in the present. I'm keen to make contact with field-workers and linguists
who have experience of, or are currently working on, devising such
orthographies (even if they are not Roman-based). I have devised a detailed
questionnaire on the problems and considerations involved in orthography
creation, and I would like to send it to any linguist who would like to
participate. All responses will be gratefully acknowledged, of course.
