The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description
The Language Research Centre of the University of Calgary invites
applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in second language studies,
including: second language acquisition, pedagogy and the use of technology
in support of these domains. The fellowship is for a twelve-month period,
beginning at a mutually agreed upon date between July 1 and Sept 1, 2007.

Purpose
Associated with the University's Language Research Centre (LRC) and
collaborating with a wide variety of units studying second language
phenomena, the Fellowship holder will be expected to undertake an
appropriate research programme in the domain of Language Learning and
Literacy, identified as contributing to the University's research strengths
and constituting one of its areas of international prominence.

The purpose of the fellowship is to provide an opportunity for scholars who
have recently completed doctoral studies to pursue scholarly research. The
post-doctoral fellow will have an office in the LRC and will have the use
of the University's Library facilities. They will be expected to share
their research in a public lecture and to involve themselves in the
community of scholars working at the LRC in a variety of languages. The
Fellowship offers the possibility of work in a multi-disciplinary context
with a team of researchers committed to both theoretical and applied
research in an area central to the development of a multicultural society
and in a context strongly supportive of second language acquisition.

The Fellowship holder will also be expected to participate in one or more
LRC projects and events, decided in conjunction with the LRC.

The LRC 's support should be acknowledged in all oral and written
publications that result from the research supported. The Fellowship offers
a competitive salary and benefits package. The application deadline is May
31, 2007. Fellows may also, with the approval of the department head of
the appropriate teaching unit, augment the stipend by teaching up to a
maximum of one full course.

Eligibility
All applicants must include proof of the date the PhD was or will be
conferred. Candidates in the final year of their doctoral programs who
wish to apply may do so on the understanding that the award will be
withdrawn if all academic requirements for the degree are not completed by
Sept 1, 2007.

Application Procedure
Applications must contain (i) a curriculum vitae; (ii) a current
transcript; (iii) a detailed statement of the research proposal in a form
that makes the applicant's research project understandable to experts in
his or her own discipline; and (iv) a descriptive title and abstract of 150
words directed to an interdisciplinary adjudication committee. Two copies
of the application are to be submitted to the LRC. It is important that
the date of Conferment of Degree and official Masters and Doctoral
transcripts be included.

Applicants must provide names of three scholars whose opinion the LRC may
seek. The applicant's list of referees is to be submitted on a separate
page that includes their addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and email
addresses.
