Meeting Description:

The SESDEF (La Société des Études Supérieures du Département d'Études
françaises) of the University of Toronto (Canada) is pleased to announce
its 12th Annual Graduate Conference in French Studies. Transmission is the
theme of this year's colloquium. How can this notion be defined? What can
or should we transmit? Who transmits to whom and why? These questions and others
will be addressed during the course of this multidisciplinary
conference, to be held on the 17th and 18th of April 2008, at the St. George
campus of the University of Toronto. We encourage all graduate students to
attend the conference and participate in the academic sessions dealing with
linguistics, literature, cultural studies, anthropology, pedagogy and more.

Call for Papers     

Topics may include, but are not limited to:
- Sociolinguistic transmission (accents, language practices, phonetic
transmission, loan words, creoles, etc.) 
- Transmission in diachronic linguistics (grammaticalization, the loss,
change or acquisition of a linguistic feature or element) 
- Transmission in language acquisition (first/second language, attrition) 
- Transmission in linguistic theory (functional/grammatical, phonetic or
semantic, pragmatic or discourse features/characteristics)
- Intergenerational transmission in literature
- Transmission of ideas, of knowledge, of secrets
- Transmission of culture, of identity
- Transmission of testimonies (concentration camps, exile, immigration,
political violence and torture, etc.)
- Transmission of an event, of a voyage
- Behavioral transmission (violent, sexual, etc.)
- Techniques of transmission: hieroglyphs, Chinese ideograms, troubadours,
peddlers
- Transmission through books, libraries, sculptures, visual art, theatre,
story telling, radio, cinema, television, internet.
- Pedagogical transmission (FSL courses, transmission of French culture,
grammar, etc.)

Submission Guidelines:
Graduate students from a variety of disciplines are invited to submit
anonymous abstracts in French (max: 500 words) in either plain text, Word
or PDF format. In the email text please provide your name, contact
information, affiliation (department and university), and the title of your
paper. Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes and must be given in
French.  Deadline for submissions is January 31, 2008.
The committee will finalize the conference schedule by the end of February
2008.

Meeting Description:

To bring together a group of specialists in various fields with the aim of
discussing the Portuguese Diaspora of the 20th century in some of its most
significant aspects. The date 1928 is an attempt to temporally delimit the
field. It is also the year of the publication of Ferreira de Castro's Os
Emigrantes, a key literary work on the Portuguese diaspora to Brazil.

Storytelling

Congresso Internacional sobre Narrativa e Diáspora Portuguesa (1928-2008)

Abstracts (20 min. paper), and panel proposals are invited for submission. All
forms of the diaspora (literary, linguistic, sociological, historical, cultural,
and others) will be considered as long as they relate to the theme explicit and
implicit in the title of the conference. Please consult the website for
suggested topics within the scope of the Conference.

Two copies of the abstract (500-words) should be sent via e-mail to
ics at brocku.ca by March 15, 2008. Please send one anonymous copy for peer
reviewing; the other should include the author's name, affiliation, e-mail
address, and paper title. Late submissions will not be accepted, and we cannot
accept papers that are to be published elsewhere. Acceptance of your paper for
presentation implies a commitment on your part to register and attend the
conference. Notification of acceptance will be sent out by April 15, 2008.
Papers may be presented in any of the following languages: English, Portuguese,
French, and Castilian.

A selection of the papers presented will be published in the independent
refereed volumes (not proceedings). The submitted papers will go through a blind
peer-review process. More information about the volumes will be circulated
amongst the participants soon after the notification of acceptance. The deadline
for submitting papers for evaluation is December 15, 2008.
