The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Web Address: http://www.uni-bielefeld.de/

Job Rank: Post Doc/PhD Student

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Formal Grammar

Description:

The newly established Cluster of Excellence 'Cognitive Interaction
Technology' at Bielefeld University is pleased to announce the immediate
availability of one two-year post-doctoral position or two two-year
doctoral positions, each with the option of a one-year renewal.

The successful applicant(s) will work within the project 'Syntactic
Building Blocks' (principal investigator: Gerhard Jaeger). The aim of the
project is to identify and study units of syntactic processing that are
larger than single lexical items or syntactic rules (along the lines of
construction grammar of data-oriented parsing). It will be investigated
whether non-standard graph-theoretic representations of syntactic structure
(like proof nets in type logical grammar, or dependency graphs) provide a
better basis for this task than standard tree banks.

The successful applicant(s) should have expertise in at least one of the
following areas:

- formal grammar
- parsing
- working with large annotated corpora
- machine learning

Salary is on the German E13-scale for postdocs (initially approx. 35K Euro
annually) and E13/2 (16.5K Euro) for PhD students.

Any inquiries concerning the post should be directed to Prof. Dr. Gerhard
Jaeger at the e-mail address below. Complete applications including: (1) a
statement of research interests, (2) a full CV, (3) two example
publications (if available), and (4) the names (and e-mail addresses) of
two referees, should be sent electronically to the same.
