The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Job Rank: Full Professor
Specialty Areas: General Linguistics

Description:

The University of Edinburgh seeks to appoint a world-class researcher to
the Chair of General Linguistics, one of the three established Chairs
within the department of Linguistics and English Language, alongside the
Chair of Applied Linguistics and the Forbes Chair of English Language. The
University solicits applications from distinguished scholars who have an
internationally outstanding record of research, and who are capable of
providing academic leadership both within their specialty and in the
department of Linguistics and English Language more generally. The area of
specialisation within linguistics is open, but the university is
particularly interested in appointing a scholar who can lead one of the
established research groups within the department, and who can also foster
links between fields within and beyond the department. The department is
embedded within a university-wide network of research and teaching on
language, maintaining particularly active collaborations with its sister
departments within the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language
Sciences, and with the School of Informatics. The holder of the Chair will
also be expected to demonstrate a commitment to furthering the discipline
of linguistics through inspiring teaching both at the postgraduate and
undergraduate level.
