The Centre for Language Studies at the Radboud University Nijmegen, The
Netherlands, invites applications for a PhD position in linguistics.

The Centre for Language Studies (CLS) at the Radboud University Nijmegen is
seeking a student with a Masters degree or equivalent to undertake a
field-work based grammatical description of one of the undescribed or
under-described Oceanic Austronesian languages of the western Solomon
Islands. The grammatical description will form the dissertation of the
successful student.

Requirements
A successful candidate must have a Masters degree or equivalent in
linguistics, and to have completed typologically-oriented courses in
language description. The successful applicant is expected to continue
their training with additional post-graduate courses in their area of
specialization. In addition they are expected to have a demonstrated
commitment to the goals of language documentation and conservation, as well
as a willingness to undertake field-work on an under-documented or
un-documented language of the Solomon Islands. Further, expertise in, or
willingness to learn, computational methods of data manipulation, storage,
and dissemination is required.

Organization
The Faculty of Arts consists of eleven departments in the area of language
and culture, history, history of arts, linguistics and business
communication, who together cater to about 2,800 students and work closely
together in teaching and research.

About the CLS
The Centre for Language Studies provides a collaborative interdisciplinary
research environment, with five research programs: Grammar and Cognition,
Language in Time and Space, Linguistic Information Processing,
Multilingualism, and Professional Communication. The CLS is part of the
Netherlands Graduate School of Linguistics (LOT), a collaboration between
major research groups of the University of Amsterdam, Free University, the
University of Leiden, Radboud University Nijmegen, University of Tilburg,
and the University of Utrecht.

Conditions of employment
Maximum salary per month, based on full-time employment: € 2.472.
The PhD students will be assigned to the function profile 'PhD Student'
(UFO system).
The starting gross salary is € 1.933 euro per month and will increase to €
2.472 in the fourth year.
Duration of contract: 1 year with a possibility of prolongation for another
2,5 years, from 1st March 2007 or ASAP after this date.
