The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set

University or Organization: University of Heidelberg
Department: English Department (Faculty of Modern Languages)
Web Address: http://www.as.uni-heidelberg.de/

Job Rank: Full Professor

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics; Historical Linguistics; Diachronic
Linguistics, Old/Middle English Focus

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

Following the retirement of Professor Gabriele Stein, the Modern Languages
Faculty of the University of Heidelberg is seeking a Professor in English
Linguistics.

Duties include teaching and examination in the BA, MA and Lehramt degree courses
offered by the English Department and collaboration on an interdisciplinary MA
in Medieval Studies. Alongside the core areas of English linguistics (phonology,
morphology, syntax and semantics), the successful candidate will be responsible
for teaching and research in diachronic linguistics, preferably with a focus on
Old and/or Middle English. Further duties include administration and attracting
funds for research; a willingness to participate in joint research projects
within the Modern Languages and other faculties is desired.

The successful candidate will be experienced in teaching at university level and
have a distinguished record of scholarship and research, including a PhD and
substantial post-doctoral publications in English Linguistics.

This is a full professorship carrying a salary payable at the W3 rate (see
www.lbv.bwl.de/service/gehaltstabellen/beamte/besoldungstabelleab082004.pdf).
The starting date for the appointment is 1st April 2008.

The post carries tenure. However, successful candidates who have not previously
held a professorial position will initially be employed on a three-year
contract. Exceptions to this rule may be made if appointments from abroad or
from outside tertiary education would not otherwise be possible. No further
application process is necessary for the post to be made permanent. The
university is striving to increase the proportion of women in teaching and
research and expressly welcomes applications from suitably qualified female
candidates. Candidates with a serious disability will be given preference over
equally qualified able-bodied applicants.

Applications for the post should include documentation and are to be sent within
the next four weeks to the address given below.
