The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

BILINGUALISM IN THEORY AND PRACTICE

CANOLFAN ESRC DROS YMCHWIL I THEORI
AC YMARFER DDWYIEITHRWYDD

We are delighted to announce new job opportunities in bilingualism at the
University of Wales, Bangor. A new ESRC Centre for Research on
Bilingualism has been established as the result of a £5 million grant from
the ESRC, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and the Welsh
Assembly Government. This is an exciting new joint venture between the
Schools of Linguistics and English Language, Education and Psychology
(rated 5* in the last RAE), making use of the excellent research facilities
available in these Schools including brain-imaging laboratories. Research
will focus on the nature of the relationship between the two languages of
individual bilingual speakers as well as amongst the wider community, based
in four different research groups: Neuroscientific, Experimental,
Corpus-based, Survey & Ethnography.

We are advertising positions for Eight Research Assistants to work at the
Centre for 2 or 3 years with one of the above-mentioned groups.

These Research Assistants will contribute to the work of projects in each
of the research groups, assisting with the collection and analysis of data
and with the writing up of results.

Applicants must have a degree qualification of a relevant Ph.D. or M.A and
B.A. as well as be computer literate, have a good command of written
English, be able to work independently and also effectively as a member of
a team and have good interpersonal communication skills. Relevant previous
experience with data collection and analysis and experience in a bilingual
context is desirable. Depending upon the specific position for which an
application is made, it will also be essential or desirable to have one or
more publications, be proficient in other languages such as Welsh and/or
Spanish, have experience working with children, adults, or the elderly, and
have a clean driving license and use of a car.
