The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Statistical NLP

Description:

The University of Geneva, Departments of Computer Science and Linguistics,
invite applications for a post-doctoral research assistant position in
natural language processing. The successful candidate will be part of the
EU-funded project CLASSiC (subject to successful completion of
negotiations). He/she will investigate statistical methods for natural
language understanding in the context of spoken dialog systems.

The CLASSiC project will target a more natural form of interaction in
spoken dialog systems through the integrated statistical treatment of
uncertainty. Machine learning and statistical methods will be applied to
all modules of the system, and explicit representations of uncertainty
(e.g. from speech recognition ambiguities) will facilitate the optimal use
of constraining information (e.g. from dialog contexts). The other project
partners are the University of Edinburgh, Cambridge University, Ecole
Superieure d'Electricite (Supelec, Metz), and France Telecom.

At the University of Geneva, the project will be lead by Paola Merlo
(Department of Linguistics, http://www.unige.ch/lettres/linguistique/) and
James Henderson (Department of Computer Science, http://cui.unige.ch/DI/).
Work will focus on models of spoken language understanding which integrate
statistical models of syntactic-semantic parsing for both English and
French. Parallel corpora will be used to help map models and resources
between the two languages. The successful candidate will be expected to
participate in this project, plus engage in research of their own choosing.

Applicants should have received a PhD in Computer Science or Computational
Linguistics by the start of the project. The ideal candidate will have a
background in natural language processing, statistical methods, machine
learning, natural language syntax, and natural language semantics. Good
programming skills are required. Knowledge of English and French is highly
desirable, and fluency in one is required.

The appointment is initially for a fixed term of 3 years, with a start date
soon after 1 January 2008. Salary from 82,800 CHF.

Review of the applicants will begin October 12th, 2007 but will continue
until the position is filled.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a statement of research
interest, and names and addresses of at least 3 references to Paola Merlo
at the address given below.

Electronic applications are also accepted. Send your application to
merlo at lettres.unige.ch with 'CLASSIC Postdoc' as the subject line.

Informal inquiries can be addressed to James Henderson
(james.henderson at ed.ac.uk) or to Paola Merlo (merlo at lettres.unige.ch).

The University of Geneva wishes to increase the proportion of female
academic staff and, for this reason, especially welcomes applications from
women.
