Assistant Professor, Tenure Track Position in Computational Linguistics

Qualifications:
PhD in linguistics with a specialization in Computational Linguistics. ABDs
may be considered if doctorate is completed by August 2008. 
Required:  Applicants must present evidence of teaching ability, scholarly
activity and awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a
multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study,
training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Responsibilities:
The Department of Linguistics and Language Development at SJSU offers a BA
and MA in Linguistics and an MA in TESOL. It is currently looking for a
linguist to teach courses in computational linguistics, as well as to teach
undergraduate and graduate courses in linguistics to students in the above
programs and in general education courses. The normal teaching load is four
three-unit courses per semester plus advising and committee work (which
includes student recruitment). The department is in the process of
obtaining permission to establish the SJSU Center for Human Language
Technology, an Organized Research Unit, which could provide course
reduction to develop activities of the center. Faculty members could also
reduce their teaching load by successfully applying for and securing grants
from on-campus and/or outside agencies.

A pattern of demonstrated excellence in teaching and continued scholarly,
professional activity, including publications in refereed venues, and fund
raising/grant activity, will be required for tenure and promotion.
Candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity
- in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic
preparation - through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Salary Range: 	
Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting Date:  
August 21, 2008
