Description:

The Department of Writing & Linguistics in the College of Liberal Arts and
Social Sciences invites nominations and applications for the position of
Assistant Professor of Applied Language Analysis. Georgia Southern
University, an institution of the University System of Georgia, is the
largest and most comprehensive center of higher education in the southern
half of Georgia. Georgia Southern University is classified by the Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a Doctoral/Research
institution. Georgia Southern is a residential university serving over
16,000 students in Fall 2007. Founded in 1906, the University offers 117
degree programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels through
eight colleges. The 675-acre park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a
community of approximately 30,000 residents, 50 miles northwest of historic
Savannah, and 200 miles southeast of Atlanta.

The Department is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Applied
Language Analysis with specialty in computer-aided analysis of text and/or
speech. Reporting to the department chair, the position is a tenure-track
academic appointment on a 9-month schedule. The teaching load at the
University is four courses per semester with the possibility of course
release for research. All members of the Writing and Linguistics Department
teach courses in the first-year writing program, and so it is a requirement
of the position to be prepared to teach one or more Composition I or
Composition II courses each semester in addition to courses related to the
candidate's specialty within one of the department's areas of
concentration: Creative Writing, Writing and Culture, Technical and
Professional Writing, and Linguistics. 

Required Qualifications:
- completed PhD in Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, English, 
Rhetoric/Composition, or a closely related field by August 1, 2008
- scholarly agenda that relates applications of language analysis to
teaching and research in one or more of the department's areas of concentration

Preferred Qualifications:
- interest and experience in grants and in helping colleagues and students
learn to apply computer technologies to the analysis of spoken and/or
written language

position is filled. The position starting date is August 1, 2008. A

cited above; a curriculum vitae; three letters of reference; and up to
