NWO Project 'Identifying and describing visual metaphor' (0,75 fte)

General
The focus group Language, Cognition, Communication in the Faculty of Arts
of VU University is one of the central research groups of the faculty, with
some 30 researchers. The group does interdisciplinary research into
effective communication in several languages (Dutch, English, French,
German), particularly in institutional settings. Special attention is paid
to the use of various media, with the new, digital media exhibiting an
innovative effect on the research. Our research into language, cognition,
and communication is situated in the new interfaculty research institute
CAMeRA (Centre for Advanced Media Research Amsterdam). Founded in 2007,
CAMeRA is an ambitious collaborative project between the faculties of Arts
(Linguistics), Social Sciences (Communication Science), Exact Sciences
(Computer Science), and Psychology. In the framework of this innovation
process we have one vacancy for a postdoc researcher for work on the way in
which visual metaphor can be identified and described by means of
psycholinguistic theories and methods as a visual variant of metaphor in
language. 

Organisation
The research will take place in the framework of the NWO project 'Visual
metaphor: a psycholinguistic approach', an interuniversity research
programme between VU University Amsterdam, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen,
and the University of Tilburg. The project at VU University aims to develop
an identification procedure for visual metaphor and to analyse the form,
meaning, and function of an substantial corpus of visual metaphor in for
instance advertisements. The projects at the other two universities focus
on the effect of these aspects on processes of cognition and communication.
The VU project is locally situated in CAMeRA.

Research
Behavioural research into visual metaphor processing by means of the think
aloud method; design of a formal identification procedure for visual
metaphor; research into conceptual and rhetorical aspects of visual metaphor.

Requirements
- PhD degree in linguistics, semiotics, cognitive science, or communication
science;
- Expertise in the analysis of visuals;
- Interest in multimodal communication in the new media;
- Adequate command of Dutch;
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.

Details
Appointment is for 75 per cent of a full-time position. The appointment
will have a trial period of 12 months. Positive evaluation will lead to
appointment for another 36 months. Appointment will preferably start on 1

Salary
The gross salary for full-time employment will start at € 3.195,- per month
in the first year, and rise to a maximum of € 3.530,- in the fourth year.
