Dear Subscribers,

This is my second year as a member of the LINGUIST crew, and it has been a 
great experience so far. As a Graduate Assistant for The LINGUIST List, I have 
learned more about the discipline of linguistics and the professional infrastructure 
than I could have ever imagined at this point so early in my career. Overall, I 
feel that my role as a Graduate Assistant for The LINGUIST List has provided me 
with the unique experience of developing and using advanced technologies that are 
so important to the developing cyber-infrastructure of the discipline.

Through my work on several major research projects at The LINGUIST List, I have 
come to realize how much the future of linguistic research relies on the ability 
of the discipline to take full advantage of current technologies and computational 
methodologies that encourage not only a wider-ranging empirical investigation of 
linguistic phenomena, but also more careful and insightful research through 
data-sharing and interdisciplinary, computer-aided collaboration. Once coming to 
this realization, one can begin to understand the importance of The LINGUIST List, 
as it is one of the major organizations currently working to spearhead such 
collaborative and interdisciplinary efforts.

As we all know, it is extremely difficult to find adequate funding in the world 
of academics.  Representing an organization that is entirely supported by user 
donations, I cannot stress how much we value your support.  As all donations go 
directly to funding the graduate students who work tirelessly to keep The LINGUIST 
List running, your contribution will have a direct effect on the ways in which 
you obtain your linguistic resources.  In closing, I am extremely grateful to be 
part of The LINGUIST List crew, and I look forward to future opportunities.  Just 
remember, your contribution not only ensures that The LINGUIST List will be able 
to continue for another year, it also provides funding for the education and 
training of future linguists.

Dear Subscribers,

We would like to share some information with you about one of our most interesting 
grant projects to date - Language and Location: A Map Annotation Project (LL-MAP). 
This project is designed to integrate language information with data from the 
physical and social sciences by means of a Geographical Information System (GIS), 
which will relate geographical information on the area in which a language is or 
has been spoken to resources relevant to the language. Through a link to the 
Multi-Tree project (http://multitree.linguistlist.org), information on all proposed 
genetic relationships of the languages will also be made available and viewable 
in a geographic context. Ultimately, the system will include ancillary information 
on topography, political boundaries, demographics, climate, vegetation, and wildlife, 
thus providing a basis upon which to build hypotheses about language movement across territory.

LL-MAP is a joint project of Eastern Michigan University and Stockholm University, 
in collaboration with several projects and archives in the USA, Europe, and 
Australia. Collaborators include PARADISEC, The Alaska Native Language Center, The
Tibetan-Himalayan Digital Library, and The WALS Project, as well as noted documentary
linguists. Technical development will be directed by The Institute for Geospatial 
Research and Education (IGRE) at Eastern Michigan University. The project is 
funded by a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation. Through this 
unique project, LL-MAP is intended to establish a framework for scholarly research,
and provides:
- A database of geospatially referenced language information 
- A user-friendly online interface which organizes the linguistic, geographic, 
  and social sciences information into customizable map layers and context-sensitive
  attribute displays 
- Flexible tools for querying, annotating, discussing, and collecting geo-referenced 
  language data 
- Web Map (WMS) and Web Feature (WFS) servers to make the data freely available 
  to others 

The LL-MAP system will encourage collaboration between linguists, historians, 
archeologists, ethnographers, and geneticists, as they explore the relationships 
between language and cultural adaptation and change. We hope it will elicit new 
insights and hypotheses, and that it will also serve as an educational resource. 
As the first project to utilize GIS technologies for language research, LL-MAP 
has the potential to be a captivating instructional tool, presenting complex data 
in a way accessible to all educational levels. Finally, as a free service available 
online, LL-MAP will increase public knowledge of lesser-known languages and cultures,
underlining the importance of language and linguistic diversity to cultural 
understanding and scientific inquiry.
