The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description:

Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Spanish Linguistics/SLA
University of Southampton (UK)
Salary: £28,289 per annum

Applications are invited for the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow
on the ESRC-funded research project "Emergence and Development of the
Tense-Aspect system in L2 Spanish". You will contribute to all aspects of
data gathering, database creation, data analysis and dissemination on this
collaborative project. The members of the research team are: Dr. Laura
Domínguez (Project Director, Southampton), Professor Ros Mitchell (Project
Director, Southampton); Professor Florence Myles (Project Director,
Newcastle); Dr María J. Arche (Project Adviser, Greenwich).

This is a fixed term full time appointment from 1 June 2008 until 30
November 2009. The aim of the project is to investigate the stages and
factors involved in the emergence of Tense and Aspect in L2 Spanish. The
team of researchers are already developing a cross-sectional database of
spoken learner Spanish, the 'Spanish Learner Language Oral Corpus'
(www.splloc.soton.ac.uk). The current project will further develop the
corpus through development of a new range of tasks (both open and closed)
that will enable us to explore the development of Tense and Aspect in L2
Spanish.

During the first stage of the project the team will design a range of
elicitation tasks to gather both spoken and written L2 Spanish from
learners at beginner, intermediate and advanced level. The digital audio
data will be transcribed using CHAT conventions, and tagged for parts of
speech using the CLAN software. The substantive research programme of the
project will be carried out during the second stage of the project, and
will also be supported through the use of CLAN.

Applicants will hold a doctorate in a relevant area of Spanish linguistics/
applied linguistics and will have a good knowledge of Spanish morphosyntax
as well as second language acquisition theory. You will have some relevant
fieldwork experience and native/ near native competence in both Spanish and
English. You will be expected to develop full expertise with CHILDES
programs (CHAT and CLAN), but previous experience of CHILDES, although
desirable, is not essential as training and support will be given as needed.

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such
can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c)
Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations
can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax
payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your
financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting
your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills
in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure
that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
