Meeting Description:

In September 2009, the City of A Coruña and the Autonomous Community of Galicia
will host the 10th World Congress of Semiotics, which aims to discuss about the
general topic of Culture of Communication, Communication of Culture.

We would like to invite all scholars and researchers to undertake with rigor and
critical capacity the natural field of semiotics, i.e. the field of all
significant phenomena regarding communication processes. From a semiotic
perspective, the main aim is to analyze and interpret all social and cultural
phenomena which make up the nowadays communication society.

This important Congress will commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the foundation
of the International Association for Semiotic Studies/Association Internationale
de Sémiotique (IASS/AIS), founded in Paris in 1969 by Roman Jakobson, André
Martinet, Roland Barthes, Algirdas Julien Greimas and Umberto Eco, among others.
In addition, it will turn the city of A Coruña into a great World Forum, not
only on the subject of Semiotics, but also on Communication and Culture. 2500
specialists in semiotics are expected to come along with one hundred
international scholars and sociologists and a dozen figures of the highest level
in this scientific researching field, and all of them have been called up by the
International Association for Semiotic Studies (IASS/AIS). 

Call for Papers

The International Semiotics Association and the Spanish Semiotics Association
would like to invite you to take part in the 10th World Congress of Semiotics
(12th Spanish Congress of Semiotics), which will take place in A Coruña, Spain,
between the 22nd and the 26th of September, 2009.

This summit is devoted to the examination of the extensive subject of Culture of
Communication, Communication of Culture and aims to approach, from a rigorous
and critical perspective, the natural field of semiotics, i.e. the field of all
signification phenomena in terms of communication processes.

This webpage has been designed in order to offer the most up-to-date information
on the summit. 

Papers:
If you wish, please submit any works you may have written on subject relating to
semiotics. In order to do this, you must register using the electronic
application form available on our website. The Scientific Committee will review
all submitted synopses and will choose a series of works to be included in the
summit's programme. 

Calendar:
- 31st, December, 2008 - Deadline for the submission of reduced-rate registration
- 30th, April, 2009 - Deadline for the submission of correspondence.
- 1st July, 2009 - Deadline for the notification of cancellations.
- 1st September, 2009 - Deadline for accommodation reservation.

Theme: 'Tasks: Context, Purpose and Use' 

The first international TBLT conference was hosted in 2005 at the University of
Leuven in Belgium and the second international conference on TBLT was hosted in
2007 at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu. As in the two previous conferences,
we look forward to bringing together researchers and educators from around the
world to share and learn from one another's innovations and research in
task-based language teaching.

Papers
30 minutes (20 minutes for presentation; 10 minutes for discussion) 

Poster Submissions
Intended as a format for reports on work in progress. Poster presentation
sessions with authors on hand to answer questions will be scheduled in due course.  

Thematic Colloquia
Collections of papers focusing on a shared topic of interest (Note: 120 minutes!)

Workshops
A forum for hands-on trialling of procedures for task design or data analysis
(either 65 or 100 minutes)

The conference will be held in the university's well-equipped conference suite.
The nearby city of Lancaster has a distinguished historic castle and boasts
several jewels of Georgian architecture. It is within 30 minutes of the Lake
District, beloved of walkers, fell runners, rock climbers, painters, poets and
writers. The campus is also close to a spectacular coastline stretching from
Glasson Dock, a couple of miles away, through Morecambe Bay to the coast of the
Southern Lakes, and also lies within easy reach of the Pennines and the
Yorkshire Dales.
