Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Oregon is searching for
a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Sociolinguistics.

We seek a candidate who will connect well with the strengths of our
department with its international outlook and its emphasis on empirical
research methodologies and the relationship between synchronic variation
and historical change.

We are particularly interested in candidates with an expertise and a strong
record of publications in one or more of the following areas:

-Native American languages and intimate familiarity with their social contexts
-Linguistic and social issues surrounding language endangerment and
revitalization
-Language and social identity, including focus on ethnic, gender, and/or
sexual identity
-The ethnography of language use
-Quantitative analysis of language use and social factors, including
corpus-based analyses

Expectations of teaching include: undergraduate courses in language and
society, sociolinguistics, and development of other courses, including
graduate seminars in areas of specialization, plus mentoring of graduate
student research. While this appointment is wholly within Linguistics,
there will be considerable opportunity to interact with faculty and
students in allied departments and programs (e.g. Native American Studies,
Sociology, Women's and Gender Studies, Anthropology, International
Studies). Ph.D. by September 16, 2010 required. Salary is commensurate with
qualifications.
