Description:

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) is
seeking Faculty research scientists from the field of Technology and Second
Language Acquisition to work in its interdisciplinary research program
investigating foreign/second language acquisition, enhancement and
maintenance by government language professionals. The successful candidate
will work with or lead multidisciplinary teams on projects involving
distance and blended learning as integrated solutions to the urgent need to
develop job-relevant language ability rapidly, sometimes without access to
classroom instruction. Current research projects examine the intersection
of technology-mediated language training and face-to-face training, best
practices for using technology for language teaching/learning throughout
any kind of curriculum, serious gaming, and task-based blended learning. 

Appointments to CASL are as members of the research faculty of the
University of Maryland under renewable three-year contracts, with a highly
competitive salary (12-month) and benefits. 

Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in Second Language
Acquisition, Second Language Studies, Applied Linguistics, or a related
field (but with significant specialization in SLA) and should possess a
record of research achievement with respect to technology and second
language acquisition issues and experience with teaching foreign or second
languages at a distance. Candidates' research and publications should
demonstrate the ability to tackle complex, interdisciplinary research and
to work collaboratively with a range of institutions and researchers. Ideal
candidates will have interests that complement CASL's strategic partners on
campus (such as Educational Technology, Second Language Acquisition, and
Psychology).

Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be already have, or be willing to
obtain, the appropriate security clearance. 

CASL, established in 2003, is the nation's 10th university-affiliated
research center. Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science research
that results in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the work
of government language professionals. Our research focuses on improving
knowledge of less commonly taught languages; enhancing the acquisition and
maintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals;
advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in a government
profession; and improving the quality of human language technology.
