New Horizons in Conflict Systems Analysis: 
Applications to the Middle East 

A Cross-Disciplinary Conference at the University of South Carolina

October 28-30, 2011

This three-day NSF-funded conference will bring together conflict scholars, primarily from Political Science, applying a range of advanced, rigorous analytic and data gathering techniques, to address the single empirical domain of the contemporary Middle East conflict system. Analytic approaches from several other disciplines will also be represented, including network analysis (Sociology), GIS [geographic information system] techniques (Geography), and identity-based analyses to social conflict (Geography and Linguistics). Focusing on a single empirical domain (the Middle East conflict) will more readily allow for a head-to-head comparison of the various approaches to conflict analysis. It will further allow for more objective evaluation of different types of data, and data gathering techniques. Finally, it will permit those interested in how the Middle East conflicts could be managed or resolved to see points of leverage and productive strategies. 

Call for Graduate Student Posters

We invite submissions from any of the above fields for inclusion in a special poster session designed to feature graduate student and graduate student co-authored research. The conference poster session will complement the six invited panel sessions.  A preliminary schedule for the conference, showing the placement of the poster session, can be found here:

Each poster presentation should be either co-authored or authored by a graduate student (i.e. faculty authors are permissible so long as they have graduate student co-authors).  

Abstract submissions should have a one-line title, and be one page in length single-spaced (one inch margins, minimum 11 pt. type) with an additional page for examples, tables, and references.  All submissions should be formatted as Word or PDF files, and anonymous, with all identifying information deleted. Submitters should separately indicate their name(s), affiliation(s), status (student/faculty), disciplinary area (e.g. political science, geography, linguistics, etc.), and paper title.  

Poster session participants will be selected from those responding to this call for papers. The deadline for poster proposals is March 15, 2011.  Notification of acceptance is anticipated by May 15, 2011.  Successful poster proposals will be eligible for a travel grant intended to cover part of the presenter(s)' travel expenses.
