Nuance has licensed a large Natural Language Process (NLP) research 
project from IBM Research (DeepQA). The technology extracts precise 
answers to natural language questions from unstructured text - text meant for 
human consumption. The candidate will be part of a team responsible for the 
core DeepQA technology at Nuance. Responsibilities include improving and 
extending the NLP, knowledge engineering, reasoning and machine learning 
technology in DeepQA as required by the use cases of interest to the Nuance 
business units.

Responsibilities:
-  Understand and be able to tune and diagnose the existing question 
answering software
-  Extend the existing technology to cover new use cases
-  Develop brand new NLP, knowledge, reasoning and machine learning 
technology to improve question answering accuracy and efficiency for the 
various Nuance use cases
-  Develop processes to turn raw data feeds into updated NLP models in an 
unsupervised fashion
-  Develop processes to automatically use field data to improve performance

Qualifications:
1)  Number of Years of Work Experience: PhD or 5 years relevant experience
 
2)  Required Skills:
Significant statistical or symbolic NLP/question answering experience. At 
least some statistical NLP or machine learning background. Strong 
algorithmic and software (Java) skills. Good problem solving and analytical 
skills are essential, as is a desire to tackle hard problems and work with 
large, complex software systems. Experience running accuracy experiments 
and systematically improving performance. Should be able to take initiative, 
but also follow a plan and work well as part of a team.
 
3)  Preferred Skills:
Both statistical and symbolic natural language processing. Knowledge 
engineering, reasoning, parsing, and machine learning. UIMA, Prolog and 
C++, Python/Perl, unix.
 
4)  Education:
Advanced degree in computer science, computational linguistics or related 
field. PhD or significant research experience.
