Description:

At the University of Vienna (15 faculties, 3 centres, about 180 fields of
study, approx. 8.600 members of staff, approx. 85.000 students) the
position of a University Assistant (Predoc) at the Department of English
and American Studies is vacant.

Research and teaching at the Department of English and American Studies
cover literary and cultural studies as well as linguistics. The department
employs more than sixty members. Presently more than 3500 students are
enrolled in its Bachelor, Masters, Diploma and Teacher Education programmes.

Degree of Employment: 30 hours/week

Areas of work:
Participation in research, administration and teaching particularly in the
area of historical English linguistics, in which text and corpus based
studies attempt to describe, to model and to explain linguistic variation
and change in terms of cognitive, sociolinguistic and evolutionary models,
and by means of quantitative methods.

Term of employment: 2 years 11 month

Profile:
Masters or Diploma Degree

-  Good knowledge of quantitative methods for describing and/or modelling
the properties and the development of complex systems, e.g. advanced
statistics, computer simulation, neural network modelling, or game theory
-  Readiness to engage with early stages of English and to acquire methods
of historical linguistic research
-  Excellent knowledge of English
-  Willingness to communicate across disciplinary boundaries and to work in
multidisciplinary research teams
