GRGC Workshop 2011

Creole Grammars & Linguistic Theories

Paris - France

23-24 June 2011

http://sites.google.com/site/grgcworkshop2011/

The Research Group on Creole Grammars (Groupe de Recherche sur les Grammaires
Créoles: GRGC), which focuses on the formal properties of Creole grammars in
their various modules (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics),
organises a two-day international workshop to be held on June 23-24, 2011 at
Université Paris-Diderot (Paris 7). The aim of this workshop is to bring
together scholars working on Creole grammars, whatever their lexifier languages
(French, English, Portuguese, Spanish...)

Guest Speakers:

Pr. Salikoko Mufwene - University of Chicago
Pr. Sibylle Kriegel - Université de Provence

Call for Papers:

The talks may bear on any aspects of Creole grammars, discussed from a synchronic or diachronic angle. The relevant issues include the following:

- Do Creole grammars reveal remarkable properties or constructions, from a general-linguistics viewpoint?
- Is there a Creole type? Are Creole languages typologically distinct from non-Creole languages?
- Can we assess or measure, on empirical grounds, the relative complexity of Creole and non-Creole grammars?
- What kinds of substantial and formal changes are involved in the emergence and development of Creole grammars?
- Are there linguistic changes specific to the development of Creole languages?

The workshop will encourage works based on firsthand data and contributing empirically and theoretically to our general understanding of Creole and other natural-language grammars.

Papers may be presented in English or French.

Important Deadlines:

February 15, 2011: Deadline for abstracts submissions
Before March 15, 2011: Notification of acceptance
